Internship Overview CONTEXT
From March to June 2024, I interned at Botanee as a UI/UX Design Intern, where our team was responsible for the usability, functionality, and overall UX/UI design of DragCrab—Botanee’s flagship, AI-powered platform designed to help digital creators streamline their workflows with advanced AI-driven tools. Collaborating closely with developers, product managers, and other stakeholders, I contributed actively to the design and refinement of V1.2.0 and V1.2.1, enabling significant user growth and market expansion.

PROBLEM
With the rapid rise and adoption of AI technologies, DragCrab attracted a surge of new users—many of whom were inexperienced with AI-based workflows. Originally tailored to experienced users, the platform presented novices with specialized terminology, complex concepts, and a steep learning curve, creating barriers to engagement and lower conversion rates. Recognizing this gap, the company set out to increase user stickiness by making the platform more intuitive, accessible, and user-friendly for a broader audience.

Final Outcomes

01Through User Research, Uncover Users' Frustration to Effectively Find Design Opportunities

In order to discover users' pain points and set optimization goals, we added a feedback button on pages that have high user traffic to collect users' opinions.

Personal Profile Page

Feedback entrances were added on two critical pages to collect users' feedback.

I compiled and organized the survey results, along with additional negative feedback gathered from customer support and community channels, into an Excel sheet to share with the team. This will help us pinpoint user pain points more effectively.

Based on the feedback and negative comments, I collaborated with product team to finalize the goals of launching the new version.

Objective-1  Improve User Retention and Reduce Churn Risk

03.1 Data Analysis & Findings
Through data analysis, I found that the number of new users on our platform has surged over the last four months, but the user churn rate remains very high. After discussions with all team members, we decided to first focus on reducing user churn and improving retention.

Based on the collected data, I highlighted three main reasons that increase the user churn rate:

Complex terminology confuses and frustrates users

Lack of clear guidance hinders user progression

Poor usability of the 'Prompt'

03.2
Ideate Design Actions for Each Key Result to Achieve Objectives

KEY RESULT 1
Reducing Cognitive Load by Revamping Microcopy & Menu

ACTION 1
We simplified technical jargon into intuitive microcopy and made rarely-used features optional for casual users.

We renamed "Checkpoint" to "Model" for clearer user comprehension.

We replaced the term "LoRA" with "Style," making it more intuitive and accessible to users.

ACTION 2
We designed an expandable "Advanced Settings" panel to include more complex and rarely used features, allowing users to toggle them on or off based on their individual needs.

KEY RESULT 2
Design a User-Friendly Introductory Guide to Reduce Frustration

ACTION 1
We designed an interactive onboarding guide that highlights key areas step by step, guiding first-time users through each feature to enhance understanding and usability.

ACTION 2
I consolidated the feature introductions into a centralized section and incorporated an accessible button, allowing users to revisit the information anytime as needed.

The button within the red-bordered box in the lower-left corner is accessible at any time for users to revisit the information.

KEY RESULT 3
Enhancing Usability with a Prompt Shortcut Assistant for Faster Interaction

ACTION 1
Designing the user flow to simplify prompt creation and reduce the complexity of prompt writing.

I mapped the user journey based on the image generation process within the platform to identify optimization opportunities. By analyzing pain points from the journey map, I narrowed the problem scope and optimized the prompt input system, enhancing user efficiency and reducing churn risk.

Implemented a Prompt Assistant button

Upon clicking, a list of commonly used prompts will appear to assist users.

Objective-2  Clearly Define Target Audience and Core Value Proposition to Optimize the User Experience

03.3 SWOT Analysis for Strategic Repositioning
KEY RESULT 1
Conduct Swot and Competitive Analyses to Pinpoint Target Users and Core Needs

I conducted a SWOT analysis to uncover new design opportunities, precisely define our target audience, refine our core value proposition, and differentiate ourselves from the competition.

Through SWOT analysis, we identified a market gap: most competitors cater to casual users, leaving professional designers underserved. To address this, we repositioned our platform as an AI-powered content creation platform for professionals.
